Up to 8 percent of adults in the United States experience serious depression at some point during their lives, and a good portion of this figure suffer directly from bipolar disorder and related syndromes. The medical society in the country has their hand full trying to decipher one form from the other, and also treat as many cases as they are able to diagnose. I tell you, this is one full time occupation for the whole country, and not just the doctors.
The pressure of life gets to all of us one way or another. And so, although there are people who are predisposed to bipolar disorder by reason of their genetic makeup, we all could catch it, really. The trick would be to wisely steer clear of things that may push us over the edge, and to get in touch with a shrink whenever you feel that pressure building up.
Major depression and major mania characterize bipolar disorder. That means that when you suffer from this condition, you get to feel sad nearly every day, crying often, and felling like the world would end; and then in a sudden almost miraculous flip, you are on the other end of the same spectrum, feeling excessive enthusiasm, and lapsing into extreme physical activity.
Read carefully: there is no medical condition that begins from worse and gradually gets better without medication. Whatever else you think, or whatever you have been told, don’t go thinking that a mental ailment like bipolar disorder will get better if you don’t treat it the way it should be. Need I say more?
